The Charcoal Masque That’s Got Me Hooked

Brightening, clarifying and refining in one – is this real life?

I’ve been quite lean in my skincare regime of late. In fact, I’ve it whittled down to just four main products that I use every day and don’t veer too far off-course.

I had forgotten how wonderful a weekly face mask was until I was very kindly sent* this new baby from an old-faithful company – Dermalogica.

Dermalogica have long been a brand that I love to use – their pre-cleanse oil is to die for and their skin-resurfacing cleanser was my first dally into chemical exfoliating products.

This time around is the Charcoal Rescue Masque.

Here’s a little breakdown of how it works:

+ Activated Binchotan Charcoal absorbs impurities super fast

+ Sulfur promotes cell turnover for faster healing and brighter skin

+ Volcanic Ash, Sea Silt, Bamboo Extract & AHAs provide dual-action exfoliation which means it further encourages cell turnover and physically removes dead cells, etc.

+ Niacinamide calms the skin and helps to reduce congestion

+ Chilean Wild Mint refines the pores

I was happy to read that it’s also formulated without artificial fragrances, colours and free from parabens. Nice one Dermalogica!

I’m not overly concerned about clarifying right now (shocking, I know) but, seeing as I’ve been having the odd micro-hydrabrasion of late, I have experienced a little more dryness than usual.

Now, let’s look at my main takeaways after getting to know this mask:

+ It sets very quickly and gets to work straight away. I wouldn’t leave it on any longer than the recommended 7-10 minutes or your face may feel like it’ll crack in two.

+ At the end of 10 minutes, I can literally see dots of ‘stuff’ sitting at my pores where the charcoal has lifted and absorbed. I have to say, this is incredibly satisfying for someone who has suffered from breakouts and acne for years.

+ I like to apply an even amount on my forehead and nose (where I experience more dryness, dullness and open pores) and then go to town around my cheeks, jawline and chin (where I suffer from congestion and discolouration from breakouts).

+ This mask boasts that it’s ‘easy-to-remove’ which I would have to agree with. For something that goes on quite thick and heavy, a touch of water gets the removal process going fast. I love to massage with wet hands to get the most out of the physically exfoliating ingredients during removal. After this, there’s usually very little product left to wipe off with a cloth.

+ I should point out that after my first use I discovered I hadn’t paid enough attention to the product sitting in my pores. When I checked my skin an hour afterward, I freaked out thinking I had blackheads galore but it was actually just charcoal that I hadn’t removed properly. Lesson learned.

If you’re looking for a super effective time saving addition to your current skincare routine, this might be your new best friend. You can get it here for a little less than other places!

Plus, I would love to know if you have any favourite time saving skincare products! I’m all about fast and effective so do share below!

Until next time beautiful,
